Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Sunday said that his Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) is free to contest the local body elections alone. He also said that all the constituent parties of the Mahayuti are free to contest the local body elections separately and independently. Addressing NCP workers in Pimpri Chinchwad city, Ajit Pawar said that contesting the elections independently will strengthen the workers.

Pawar said, “Even though we fight the Lok Sabha and state assembly elections together, the members of the Mahayuti are free to fight the local body elections alone.” Junior Pawar’s announcement comes after a section of local NCP leaders in Pimpri Chinchwad quit the party and joined the Sharad Pawar faction.

After his party’s poor performance in the recent Lok Sabha elections, Ajit Pawar is facing the challenge of proving his political ability in the upcoming assembly elections. Let us tell you that under the local body elections, elections of Municipal Councils, Nagar Panchayats and District Councils are held, although the date of the election has not been decided yet.

The ruling Mahayuti alliance also includes the Shiv Sena led by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the NCP led by Ajit Pawar.

64-year-old Ajit Pawar had rebelled against his uncle Sharad Pawar last year and broke away from the party. He joined the ruling ‘Mahayuti’ alliance along with his loyal MLAs and MPs. He was then made Deputy Chief Minister in the Eknath Shinde-led government. Earlier this year, the Election Commission recognised his faction as the real NCP and allotted him the NCP clock election symbol.
