Two people, including the driver, were arrested after a luxury car belonging to Maharashtra BJP chief Chandrashekhar Bawankule’s son Sanket hit several vehicles in Nagpur’s Ramdaspeth area, a police official said. According to a Sitabaldi police station official, the Audi car first hit complainant Jitendra Sonkambale’s car at around 1 am on Sunday night and then hit a moped, injuring two youths riding on it.
He said, ‘The Audi car hit some more vehicles going towards Mankapur area. There, at the T-point, the vehicle hit a Polo car. Its occupants chased the Audi car and stopped it near the Mankapur bridge. Three people including Sanket Bawankule, who were in the car, fled.’
“The driver of the car, Arjun Haware, and another person, Ronit Chittamwar, were stopped by the people in the Polo car. They were taken to the tehsil police station, from where they were handed over to the Sitabaldi police for further investigation,” the official said.
The officer said that the occupants of the Audi car were returning from a beer bar in Dharampeth when the incident took place. However, he did not give information whether any of them was drunk or not. Sitabaldi police station officer said, ‘On the complaint of Sonkambale, a case has been registered for negligent driving and other charges. Haware and Chittamwar were later released on bail. Further investigation is underway.’
Speaking to reporters about the incident, Maharashtra BJP chief Bawankule admitted that the Audi car was registered in the name of his son Sanket. The senior BJP leader said, “The police should conduct a thorough and impartial investigation into the accident without any bias. Those found guilty should be prosecuted and appropriate action should be taken against them. I have not spoken to any police officer. The law should be equal for all.”
