The Indian Medical Association has called for a 24-hour nationwide strike today, i.e. Saturday, in protest against the rape and murder of a female doctor in Kolkata. The association has also prepared a list of demands from the government. It also says that hospitals should be made safe zones so that the safety of doctors can be ensured. Let us tell you that after the Kolkata incident, there is anger among doctors across the country. Earlier also, OPD services have been disrupted due to doctors’ strike.
IMA is also protesting against the mob attack on the hospital by holding an RG. It is alleged that the mob attacked and vandalised the hospital and tried to tamper with evidence. In this way, double negligence has come to light in this case. First, a woman doctor is brutally assaulted in the seminar hall of the hospital. She dies in this. After this, the mob indulges in hooliganism in the same hospital and tries to tamper with evidence.
IMA put forward five demands
IMA has announced that all medical services will remain closed for 24 hours. However, emergency services will continue. IMA has made five demands from the government. The first demand is that the safety of people associated with the medical profession should be ensured. The matter should be taken cognizance of at the policy level and standards for safety should be set. The association has written in its letter that CCTV surveillance should be arranged. At the same time, there should be a speedy investigation in the case of the murder of the trainee doctor. There is a demand that the central government should make a law to protect doctors from atrocities. Apart from this, the Medical Council should be strengthened.
Let us tell you that a 31-year-old trainee doctor was raped and murdered in Kolkata’s RG Kar Hospital. The doctor’s body was found in a very bad condition. Blood was flowing from her private parts and eyes. The accused in this case was arrested. The investigation of this case has been handed over to the CBI.
What will remain closed and what will remain open
The strike started at 6 am on Saturday and will continue till 6 am the next morning (18 August). During this time, all services except emergency services will remain closed. Before going to a hospital, it is important to find out which services are going on there. This strike will take place in both government and private hospitals. Small hospitals are also involved in the strike. Earlier, senior and junior resident doctors posted in MCD hospitals in Delhi had gone on strike.
