Palestinian militant group Hamas said it has elected Yahya Sinwar as its new leader. Sinwar is the main conspirator of the attacks on Israel on October 7 last year. Hamas said in a statement on Tuesday that it has appointed Sinwar as the new head of its political bureau. Sinwar will replace Ismail Haniyeh.
Haniyeh was killed in an alleged Israeli attack in Iran last week. Sinwar has not appeared in public since Hamas’ attack on southern Israel on October 7 last year. In the attack last year, militants killed 1,200 people and took about 250 hostage. After this attack, Israel launched a military operation on Gaza.
Death of Ismail Haniyeh
Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh was killed in an early morning airstrike in the Iranian capital on July 31. Iran and the militant group Hamas said this on Wednesday. Iran and Hamas have blamed Israel for the killing of Haniyeh, who took place after he attended the swearing-in ceremony of Iran’s president. Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei had vowed to take revenge from Israel.
Hamas blamed Israeli airstrikes for the death of Haniyeh, the head of its political bureau. Meanwhile, Iran’s paramilitary force ‘Revolutionary Guard’ said it was investigating Haniyeh’s murder.
