Three Lals of Haryana, Bansilal, Bhajanlal and Devi Lal. This slogan has been given in the state for decades. All three Lals have contributed a lot to Haryana politics and have been Chief Ministers. Not only this, the fourth generation of Tau Devi Lal is now in the state politics. But in this assembly election, the family members of these three Lals of Haryana do not seem to be in a very strong position. On one hand, there is a period of internal strife in Devi Lal’s family and due to this two parties INLD and JJP have come into existence, while on the other hand, the legacy of Bhajan Lal and Bansilal also does not seem as strong as before. One reason for this is the rise of BJP in Haryana politics.
The situation is such that out of these three families who were once contenders for the CM post, 2 have now probably given up hope for it. The families of Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal have accepted the leadership of CM Naib Singh Saini and are now a part of the BJP. They have no claim for the CM post. Similarly, the condition of Indian National Lok Dal is also weak now. There are two factions in Devi Lal’s family – Abhay Chautala and Dushyant Chautala. Abhay is the leader of INLD, while Dushyant is leading the Jannayak Janata Party.
Even though Devi Lal’s family is doing independent politics among the three Lals, but due to factionalism, they are not in a position to stake any claim for the CM post. Bhajan Lal’s son Kuldeep Bishnoi had already said that he is with CM Naib Singh Saini. He joined BJP in 2022 and now the party has given a chance to his son. Kuldeep Bishnoi once saw himself as an alternative to Bhupinder Singh Hooda in the Congress. But he parted ways with the party in 2007, when Hooda was made the CM. From here things started changing and then he could never remain stable.
Similarly, Bansi Lal’s daughter Kiran Chaudhary is also now a part of BJP. Recently, BJP has made her a Rajya Sabha MP and her daughter Shruti Chaudhary has got a MLA ticket. She also had enmity with Hooda. Shruti Chaudhary has also accepted the leadership of Nayab Singh Saini. It is worth noting that BJP was not a very strong player in Haryana before 2014, but after the rise of BJP, the support base of Devi Lal, Bansi Lal and Bhajan Lal families has weakened. Haryana’s politics now looks bipolar as BJP and Congress.
