Heavy rains lashed many parts of western India on Saturday, affecting normal life in Mumbai and Nagpur. One person was killed in a cloudburst incident in Himachal Pradesh. A Met official said Mumbai received intermittent rains, leading to waterlogging in many parts of the city. However, local train operations remained normal. A high tide of up to 3.66 metres is expected at 11:18 pm, the official said. The city received 91 mm rainfall in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Saturday, while its eastern and western suburbs recorded 87 mm and 93 mm rainfall respectively, the India Meteorological Department said.
According to the Meteorological Department, Vidarbha (Maharashtra), Dwarka (Gujarat), Bijapur (Chhattisgarh), Malkangiri (Odisha), Hamirpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Shivamogga (Karnataka) received the most rainfall in the last 24 hours. The IMD on Saturday issued a red alert in several states, including Gujarat and Konkan region, while an orange alert was issued for coastal Karnataka and Telangana. Nagpur received heavy rains for three hours in the morning, due to which normal life was affected due to waterlogging in low-lying areas. Officials had to move people to safer places and declare a holiday in schools and colleges for the day as a precautionary measure. Officials said that about 50 students were trapped in their college due to flooding in Hudkeshwar Nagar area of the city, but were later rescued.
Heavy rain predicted for next 2 days
The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Nagpur and other districts of Vidarbha region in the next 2 days. Also, people were advised not to leave their homes unless necessary. The IMD has forecast light to moderate rain or thundershowers at most places in Telangana. Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been warned at isolated places in 10 districts of the state. Officials said that the depression over the Bay of Bengal crossed the coast near Chilika Lake, causing heavy rains in Odisha on Saturday. At least 23 families were evacuated from vulnerable areas to safer places due to heavy rains in Malkangiri district. The IMD has forecast more rains in the next 5 days.
40 people died in rain related incidents
A person was swept away in a cloudburst incident in Raitua village of Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh late Friday night. 40 people have died in rain-related incidents in the state since the onset of monsoon on June 27. The state Meteorological Department on Saturday issued a warning of moderate flood danger in some areas of Sirmaur and Shimla districts in the next 24 hours. Heavy to very heavy rain, thunderstorm and lightning have been warned in isolated areas of the state on July 23. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert in Uttarakhand for Sunday and Monday. Also, it was said that during this period, extremely heavy rains may occur in many parts of the state.
