The day of justice has arrived in the ‘Ajmer sex scandal’ which ruined the lives of more than 100 girls 32 years ago. The court has held the remaining 6 accused guilty in this infamous case of gangrape and blackmail. 6, including Nafees Chishti and Naseem alias Tarzan, have been convicted by the special POCSO court of Ajmer. Out of the total 18 culprits, 9 have already been sentenced. However, the High Court had released 4, declaring them innocent.
It was the year 1992. A journalist found nude pictures of girls in a photo studio lab in Ajmer. When the news was published in the newspaper the next day, it caused a sensation. Along with this, Rajasthan’s biggest sex scandal was exposed in which more than 100 girls had become victims. Some reports even claimed that the blackmail gang had raped about 250 girls. Most of these girls were under 20 years of age.
Most of the girls who fell victim to gang rape were from different schools of Ajmer. The girl trapped in the trap was gang raped and her nude pictures were taken. Then they were blackmailed and asked to bring a new girl. In this way, one girl after another became the victim of this gang. When this matter was revealed, many victim girls committed suicide.’ Communal tension also arose in Ajmer over this incident because most of the accused were from the Muslim community and most of the victim girls were Hindus.
Many of the accused were associated with the influential Khadim family who are involved in the management of Dargah Khwaja Mohiuddin Chishti Dargah. The most influential among them were Farooq and Nafees Chishti who were Youth Congress leaders. The people involved in the incident were financially and politically very influential. At that time, Bhairon Singh Shekhawat’s government was in power in the state. It was also alleged that the police delayed taking action and during this time many evidences were destroyed.
Suhail Ghani Chishti, one of the main accused, remained absconding for nearly 26 years. This accused, who had a bounty of Rs 25,000 on his head, surrendered in 2018. After the case was revealed, 30 victims came forward and 12 filed a case. But only 2 attended the trial in the court. Many victims had left the city.
