Mumbai heavy rain updates: Rain in Mumbai has created havoc in the entire city. Roads and streets have turned into rivers and drains. Many flights and trains have been cancelled. Even the army has come in along with the NDRF to save people’s lives. A 17-year-old boy died after falling into a drain due to heavy rain in Vasai East on Monday evening. Meanwhile, CM Eknath Shinde has appealed to people not to step out of their homes unless it is very important. The Meteorological Department has also issued a red alert for many areas of Mumbai. Officials have issued helpline numbers for relief and rescue.
The boy who died after falling into a drain due to heavy rains on Monday evening has been identified as Aryan Mahadik. It is being told that at 8 pm he was passing through a waterlogged road in Vasant Nagari in Vasai East, when he slipped on the slope and fell into the drain. The fire brigade pulled him out of the drain and rushed him to the hospital where doctors declared him dead. Police have registered a case of accidental death (ADR) in the matter.
Waterlogging on tracks, rail services affected
Mumbai has been receiving heavy rains since 1 am on Sunday night. Due to which suburban train services of Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) were affected on Monday. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has installed pumps at many places to drain out the flood water. Many areas of Mumbai-MMR received more than 250 to 300 millimetres (mm) of rain during the last six to seven hours after midnight.
Mumbai is drowning in a single rain
BMC officials said, “More than 300 mm of rain was recorded at various places in Mumbai in a span of six hours from around 1 am to 7 am today. Heavy rains caused waterlogging in some low-lying areas and disrupted suburban train services.” The BMC said that as the Mumbai Regional Meteorological Centre has warned of heavy rains during the day, government, private schools and colleges have been declared a holiday for the first session of the day. The civic body has advised people to step out of their homes only if it is essential in view of the weather. During the 22-hour period from 8 am on Sunday to 6 am on Monday, Mumbai city recorded an average of 110.10 mm of rain, while the eastern and western suburbs received 150.53 mm and 146.35 mm of rain respectively.
CM Shinde’s appeal – do not go out of the house
Heavy rains in Mumbai have caused such havoc that many MLAs and members of the Legislative Council could not reach the House on Monday due to rain and waterlogging. Due to which the proceedings of both the houses had to be adjourned on Monday. CM Eknath Shinde has appealed to the people not to leave their homes unless it is very necessary. The NDRF is continuously engaged in relief and rescue along with the administration officials. The Army, Navy and Air Force have been put on alert.
