Former veteran opener Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of Team India. The BCCI announced this on Tuesday. Rahul Dravid’s tenure ended after the T20 World Cup 2024. Gambhir will take charge from the Sri Lanka tour, which is to start later this month. This will be Gambhir’s first assignment at the national level. He has not been the head coach of any team yet. His coaching experience has been in the IPL. Under his mentorship, KKR won the IPL 2024 trophy. He was the mentor of Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons before that. Gambhir’s tenure will be about three and a half years. He will hold this position till the year 2027.

The BCCI secretary wrote on the social media platform ‘X’, “I am extremely happy that Gautam Gambhir has been appointed as the new head coach of the Indian cricket team. Cricket has evolved rapidly in modern times and Gautam has seen this changing landscape very closely. Having performed brilliantly in a variety of roles throughout his career, I am confident that Gautam is the most suitable person to take Indian cricket forward. His clear vision for Team India and his vast experience have made him perfectly positioned to take on this exciting coaching role. The BCCI is with him on this new journey.”
