CJI DY Chandrachud News: Supreme Court Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud reprimanded a lawyer on Tuesday. The lawyer had come before CJI Chandrachud with a complaint against another Supreme Court judge. The lawyer argued that he had come to the court demanding the removal of the penalty for a public interest litigation. The advocate claimed that I was only demanding the withdrawal of the order of imposing the fine and the judge instead asked me to leave the court and threatened to cancel the license. He has been sentenced to a fine of Rs 50,000 for the PIL. After hearing the lawyer’s argument, the CJI got angry at the lawyer. He said that now my patience is breaking… if you are upset with the court’s order, then file a review petition.
Advocate Ashok Pandey on Tuesday approached Chief Justice DY Chandrachud’s court and claimed that the judge had threatened to suspend his licence. Distressed by the lawyer’s conduct, Chief Justice Chandrachud said that the Supreme Court does not have the facility of intra-court appeal. “If you are dissatisfied with any order of the court, you have the option of a review petition. Every judge of this court is very experienced and has decades of experience as a lawyer as well,” he said.
CJI said- now my patience is running out
Pandey said that the Supreme Court has imposed a fine on him for filing a PIL. He told the bench, “I was only seeking withdrawal of the order imposing the fine, but instead the judge asked me to leave the courtroom and even threatened that my license would be cancelled.” CJI Chandrachud told Pandey that his patience was running out. He said, “I have been listening to you for a long time and now my patience is running out. I can understand what must be happening in other courts? Please act according to the law.”
CJI said- sometimes there is a heated argument
Pandey later said how would the PIL system work if the court imposed costs on petitioners. The Chief Justice later said that sometimes cases in courts escalate and there are heated exchanges between judges and parties, but the judges of the apex court are experienced and know how to deal with such situations.
It is worth noting that Ashok Pandey was reprimanded by two courts earlier in the day. This includes a bench headed by Justice Abhay S Oka. The bench headed by Justice Oka reprimanded Pandey for not depositing the fine of Rs 50,000 imposed on him for filing a “frivolous” petition and directed him to deposit the amount within two weeks. The bench also included Justice Augustine George Masih, who rejected Pandey’s request for more time to deposit the amount.
