The Mamata Banerjee government of West Bengal, which is facing criticism from all sides on the Kolkata incident, is going to present a draft law in the Legislative Assembly on Tuesday to give strict punishment to the rapists. In this draft bill, the government has proposed death penalty for the persons convicted of rape. According to the draft bill, if the victim dies or goes into unconscious state due to the acts of the convicted rapist, then a provision has been made to give him death penalty.
According to a PTI report, the draft bill also proposes that those convicted of rape or gang rape will be sentenced to life imprisonment. The draft bill has been named ‘Aparajita Mahila and Bal Bill (West Bengal Criminal Law and Amendment) Bill 2024’.
The aim of this new law is to amend existing laws and better protect women and children by adding new rules regarding rape and sexual crimes. This draft bill also proposes to amend the Indian Justice Code 2023, Indian Civil Protection Code 2023 and Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act 2012. Apart from this, the aim of this amendment is to increase the punishment given to the culprits, expedite the investigation of serious crimes against women and children and create a legal framework to ensure speedy justice.
