Jammu and Kashmir Election 2024 LIVE UPDATES: The first phase of voting for the assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir has started on Wednesday. Voting is to be held on 24 seats today. There are 219 candidates in the fray, including Iltija Mufti, daughter of former Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti. Today, more than 35,000 displaced Kashmiri Pandits living across the country are eligible to vote at 24 polling stations.

Elections are to be held on Wednesday for 24 assembly seats in seven districts of Jammu and Kashmir. More than 23 lakh voters will exercise their franchise for 219 candidates including 90 independents on 24 seats. Displaced Kashmiri Pandits will be able to exercise their franchise in 16 assembly constituencies of Anantnag, Pulwama, Shopian and Kulgam districts of South Kashmir.

This phase will also decide the fate of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) president Mehbooba Mufti’s daughter Iltija Mufti (Srigufwara-Bijbehara), All India Congress Committee (AICC) general secretary and former minister Ghulam Ahmed Mir (Dooru), four-time MLA and veteran Communist Party of India (Marxist) (CPI-M) leader MY Tarigami (Kulgam), former minister and senior Congress leader Peerzada Sayeed (Anantnag) and National Conference (NC)’s Sakina Itoo (DH Pora).

An official of the commission said, “In the first phase, 1.23 lakh youth aged between 18 and 19 years, 28,309 Divyangs and 15,774 elderly voters above the age of 85 years will also be able to exercise their franchise.”

The official said, “There are 302 polling stations in urban areas and 2,974 in rural areas. Four election personnel including the presiding officer will be deployed at each polling station…”
