Sitaram Yechury, a veteran leader of the leftist party CPM, has passed away. He breathed his last at the age of 72 in AIIMS Hospital, Delhi. He was admitted to AIIMS Hospital on 19 August and was on life support system since then. Recently, there was a slight improvement in his health, but then his condition became critical when he had trouble breathing. He was suffering from a chest infection like pneumonia. A team of specialist doctors of AIIMS was constantly monitoring him, but he could not be saved.
Sitaram Yechury has left behind his wife Seema Chishti Yechury and daughter Akhila Yechury. His son Ashish passed away in 2021. Sitaram Yechury started politics from his student life and was a part of the JNU Students Union. He started his political career by going to jail during the Emergency. In his political career of nearly 5 decades, he was the pivot of the left. He is also credited with bringing the leftist parties into coalition politics. During UPA One and UPA Two, he was the one who persuaded the leftist parties to be a part of the government.
He was given the responsibility as the general secretary of CPM in April 2015. Apart from this, he was awarded the Best MP Award in Rajya Sabha in 2016. Sitaram Yechury was committed to values like secularism, economic equality throughout his life. Talking about his early life, Sitaram Yechury was born on August 12, 1952 in Madras. He belonged to a Telugu Brahmin family. His father was an engineer in Andhra Pradesh Roadways and his mother was also a government official. He grew up in Hyderabad and studied at All Saints High School in Hyderabad till class tenth.
After this, he moved to Delhi and got higher education from DUA and JNU. Yechury got BA Honors degree in Economics from Delhi University and then did MA in Economics from JNU. He also wanted to do PhD in Economics, but then during the Emergency, he became a part of the movement. He was arrested and had to go to jail. From here, he broke his connection with studies and became completely active in politics. Sitaram Yechury had good relations with many parties including Congress and RJD. He always tried to bring together parties with similar ideology.
