Indian team batsman Virat Kohli revealed on Thursday during the team’s felicitation ceremony in front of a packed audience at the Wankhede Stadium that he had never seen Indian captain Rohit Sharma so emotional in 15 years, who hugged him with teary eyes after winning the T20 World Cup. Most of the players of the Indian team looked very emotional after winning the trophy. Players like Rohit, Bumrah, Kohli and Hardik were seen crying.
“This is the first time in 15 years that I have seen Rohit so emotional. When we were climbing the stairs (at Kensington Oval) he was crying and I was crying too,” Virat Kohli said during the felicitation ceremony held after the memorable ‘Victory Parade’ on an open bus.
When Kohli was 21 years old, he had said on this very ground that it was right to carry the burden of Indian cricket on the shoulders of the great Sachin Tendulkar who had carried it for 21 years. Kohli (34 years old) announced his retirement from this short format of cricket last week after winning the trophy. Standing on this ground, he hoped that he and his captain have done well to shoulder the responsibility for 15 years and bring the trophy to the country.
Kohli said, “I think we (Rohit and I) have taken the responsibility and there is nothing better than bringing the trophy back here (Wankhede).” He knew during the innings break of the final that this was his last match. Kohli said, “After half the match was over, I knew that now the time has come that the next generation should take responsibility.”
In 2011, he was the youngest member of the team, he saw Sachin Tendulkar, Harbhajan Singh and Yuvraj Singh getting emotional and perhaps he did not understand their emotionality. But now he can understand it very well. He said, “I could not understand the emotions of the senior players that night (after winning the 2011 World Cup) when they started crying but now I can understand them.” (Agency input)
