Scientists discovered 138 small asteroids on main asteroid belt

Asteroids are those rocky objects that our Earth faces every day. The American space agency NASA tracks them and issues alerts about those asteroids which are going to pass close to the Earth. After scanning the data of the largest telescope in space (JWST), scientists have found a lot of small asteroids. One of these is the smallest asteroid discovered so far and is present in the Main Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter.

According to the report of Space.com, due to being small, these asteroids can enter the Earth’s atmosphere compared to larger asteroids. There is also a possibility that unless they come very close to us, it may be difficult for scientists to track them.

Planetary scientist Artem Burdanov of Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), who was among the scientists who discovered them, has said that we have detected many asteroids. A total of 138 asteroids have been discovered, the smallest of which is about 10 meters. According to the report, this smallest asteroid was around an exoplanet revolving around a red dwarf star TRAPPIST-1.

What are asteroids

According to NASA, these are also called minor planets. Just as all the planets in our solar system revolve around the Sun, similarly asteroids also revolve around the Sun. Asteroids are rocky remnants left over from the early formation of our solar system about 4.6 billion years ago.

Most asteroids rotate between Mars and Jupiter

Most asteroids are found in the main asteroid belt, which lies between Mars and Jupiter. Their size can range from 10 meters to 530 kilometers. The total mass of all the asteroids discovered so far is less than that of the Earth’s Moon.
