Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement, said- Mother won the wrestling match against me and I lost… sorry

Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has announced her retirement from wrestling on Thursday, August 8, early in the morning. She informed about this on the social media platform Instagram. She posted on Instagram and wrote, ‘Maa, wrestling won over me, I lost, sorry.’ Before the final of the Paris Olympics, she had to be disqualified due to being 100 grams overweight, after which Vinesh took this decision. With this, her dream of winning a medal in the Olympics also remained unfulfilled. She has represented India in the 2016, 2020 and 2024 Olympics, but she could not win a medal even once. After reaching the final in Paris, her silver medal was confirmed, but she was disqualified due to being overweight.

Vinesh Phogat announced her retirement on social media and wrote, ‘Maa, wrestling won over me, I lost. I am sorry. Your dream and my courage are all broken. I don’t have any more strength left. Goodbye wrestling 2001-2024. I will always be indebted to you all. Sorry.’

Vinesh Phogat was fighting in the 50Kg category at the Paris Olympics. On August 6, she defeated three wrestlers to make it to the finals, including world number 1 and defending Olympic champion Yui Sasaki. However, the next day after the match, she was disqualified for being 100 grams overweight.

Vinesh Phogat has complained against the decision of the Olympics in the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). CAS will give an interim decision on Thursday about whether Vinesh Phogat will get a medal or not.

Vinesh worked out overnight to lose weight which led to her falling sick due to dehydration and she had to be hospitalised.
