The death toll in floods and landslides caused by rain in Nepal increased to 112 on Sunday. Police gave this information. Large parts of eastern and central Nepal have been submerged since Friday and flash floods have occurred in many parts of the country. According to Armed Police Force sources, 64 people are missing while 68 people have been injured due to floods and landslides.
Maximum 48 people have died in Kathmandu Valley. At least 195 houses and eight bridges were damaged. Security personnel rescued about 3,100 people. According to eyewitnesses, they have not seen such a devastating flood in the Kathmandu Valley in the last 40-45 years. The armed police force said in a statement that the death toll had risen to 102.
Arun Bhakta Shrestha, climate and environment expert at the International Center for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), said, ‘I have never seen floods of this scale in Kathmandu before.’ A report published by ICMOD on Saturday said the Bagmati, Kathmandu’s main river, was flowing above the danger mark after torrential rains lashed eastern and central Nepal on Friday and Saturday.
It said exceptionally intense rainfall occurred on Saturday due to the low pressure system and monsoon conditions in the Bay of Bengal. Scientists say that due to climate change, the amount and timing of rainfall is changing across Asia. Due to floods and landslides, life has come to a standstill in many parts of Nepal. Many highways and roads are blocked, hundreds of houses and bridges have been washed away and hundreds of families displaced. Thousands of passengers are stranded at various places due to road blockage.
