A team of archaeologists has discovered 13 ancient mummies in a cemetery in Oxyrhynchus. Gold tongue and nails have been found in these mummies. The tourism ministry says the mummies have been discovered with ritual images of deities. Something like this had never been found before in this area.

In a press release, the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities has given information about this discovery. Dozens of mummies have been discovered at the site with ritual images of deities that had never been seen in the region before, the ministry said. The team dug a shaft buried under the earth till the foothills, after which these mummies were found. On digging here, the team found a hall in which three chambers were made. Mummies were kept in these chambers.

Live Science According to the report, in ancient times the Egyptians used to place gold tongues in mummies to help the deceased speak in the afterlife. The Egyptians believed that ‘gold’ was the ‘flesh’ of the gods. On the other hand, gold nails have also been found near the mummies. According to the search team, the finding of nails is a unique part of this discovery.

The mummies are said to be from the Ptolemaic period, which is said to be from about 304 BC to 30 BC. The discovery is the first of its kind in the archaeological area of Al-Bahnasa in Minya Governorate. According to Salima Ikram, Professor of Egyptology at the American University in Cairo, the number of gold tongues found with them is very high, which is quite interesting. The professor says that probably these bodies would be of people of high elite class who were associated with the temple and animal cult.

Earlier this year, a joint Egyptian-American team of archaeologists found 11 sealed bodies in a tomb near the South Assassif Necropolis. Skeletons of men, women and children were found in these 11 graves. The Tourism Ministry said it was a family tomb that may have been used for several generations during the 12th Dynasty and early 13th Dynasty.
