24 people burnt alive in Awami League leader’s hotel, 440 people have been killed in Bangladesh so far

About 24 people present in this hotel were burnt alive. These people also include an Indonesian citizen who was staying in the hotel. Late on Monday night, a mob set fire to the Jabir International Hotel owned by District Awami League General Secretary Shahin Chakkaldar in Johor district, in which 24 people were burnt alive.

Most of the dead were hotel guests. A local Dhaka journalist said, “An Indonesian national is also among the dead.” He said doctors at Johor General Hospital confirmed that they have counted 24 bodies, while surviving hotel staff fear there may be more bodies in the rubble. According to media reports, a violent mob protesting against the Awami League government set fire to the ground floor of the hotel and it soon spread to the upper floors.

Almost similar reports have come from all over Bangladesh and angry mobs have vandalised residences and business establishments of several Awami League leaders and workers. Chaos has spread in Bangladesh after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on Monday. At present, the death toll due to this riot in the country has risen to 440. According to local media, more than 100 people have died since Monday. The army is trying to control the situation in the violence-hit country.

There is tense peace after the riots, but people are still not fearless

Despite the rising death toll, there were signs of the situation returning to normal on Tuesday, with police and army patrolling the streets, bdnews24.com news portal said. After Monday’s unrest and tense overnight, the situation in Dhaka remained mainly calm on Tuesday morning, the portal said. Buses and other public transport were seen plying on the roads, and local shopkeepers also opened their shops, according to reports. Government vehicles were seen heading towards offices and several battery-operated rickshaws were also seen on the streets, the news portal reported.
