American devices maker Apple is preparing to invest about one billion dollars in setting up a manufacturing plant in Indonesia. Components for smartphones and other products will be made in this plant. Indonesia had banned the sale of the company’s iPhone 16 in October due to lack of local manufacturing.

Indonesia’s Investment Minister Rosan Roeslani said that company The investment plan is being finalized. He said that talks will be held with Apple to increase investment. An announcement regarding this can be made next week. Recently, Apple’s investment proposal of about $100 million was rejected by the Indonesian government. The company did not respond to a request for comment. The population of Indonesia is about 28 crores. This is one of the big markets for Apple.

Indonesia had banned the sale of the company’s iPhone 16 due to not following local content rules. In some other countries the company has followed such rules. Recently, Roeslani told MPs in a hearing that if Apple decides to make Indonesia a part of its supply chain, it will have to increase investment.

Difficulties may increase for Apple in India also. Last month, the Competition Commission of India (CCI) had refused to stop the investigation against the company related to violation of competition law. The company is accused of misusing its dominant position in the market. A Reuters report quoted CCI’s internal order as saying that Apple’s request to withhold the investigation report has been found to be false. The company was found guilty of suppressing competitors on its iOS operating system. This investigation against Apple was started about four years ago. This was related to the company’s alleged misuse of its dominant position in the apps market. Apple was accused of forcing developers to use its proprietary in-app purchase system due to its strong position in the apps market.
