The CBI arrested the Aam Aadmi Party national convenor on June 26 when he was in ED custody. He later got interim bail from the Supreme Court in the ED case.
Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has got bail in the alleged liquor scam. While granting bail to Kejriwal, the court also said that his arrest was not wrong. A bench of Justice Suryakant and Justice Ujjwal Bhuinya gave this decision. The court said that since the chargesheet has been filed and the trial is not going to be completed in the near future, there is no justification for keeping him in jail for a long time. Kejriwal will have to pay a bail bond of Rs 10 lakh.
After hearing both the sides, the Supreme Court had reserved the verdict on September 5. Kejriwal had filed two separate petitions challenging his arrest and denial of bail in the corruption case registered by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
The CBI arrested the Aam Aadmi Party’s national convenor on June 26 when he was in ED custody. Later, he got interim bail from the Supreme Court in the ED case. But due to his arrest in the CBI case, he could not get out of jail. Earlier, the Delhi High Court had justified Kejriwal’s arrest in the CBI case.
The High Court had said that after the arrest of Kejriwal by the CBI, there is now sufficient evidence against him and looking at the relevant evidence, it cannot be said that the arrest was without reason or illegal. The High Court had asked him to go to the trial court for bail. Kejriwal moved the Supreme Court against this decision of August 5.
Before this decision of Kejriwal in the Supreme Court, accused like former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi Manish Sisodia, Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh, BRS leader K Kavitha, AAP’s communication in-charge Vijay Nair have already got bail in the alleged liquor scam case.
There are allegations of corruption in the new liquor policy made in the financial year 2021-22. Later, the Delhi government canceled it. ED and CBI allege that bribes were taken from liquor businessmen in return for unfair benefits. The investigating agencies have described him as the mastermind of the scam. However, the Aam Aadmi Party and the Delhi government have rejected the allegations.
