Arvind Kejriwal has finalised the name of the new Chief Minister of Delhi by choosing Atishi as his successor. Arvind Kejriwal himself proposed her name in the legislative party meeting and the MLAs unanimously elected Atishi as their leader. Atishi, a first-time MLA and a minister for the first time in 2023, has achieved this height in a charismatic way. Atishi, who was once close to Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, won Kejriwal’s trust by taking a ‘U-turn’ in the biggest rebellion of the Aam Aadmi Party.

The incident is of 2015. The party formed in 2012 had to face a major upheaval just three years later. Two veteran leaders of the party, Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan, had a rift with party supremo Arvind Kejriwal. During this rebellion of the party, Atishi was removed from the post of party spokesperson. The reason was that she was considered close to Yogendra Yadav. It is said that Yadav himself had brought her to the Aam Aadmi Party.

Atishi left Yogendra Yadav’s side and expressed trust in Kejriwal

At that time, Atishi took a decisive decision which proved to be a masterstroke for her after 9 years. Atishi wrote a letter and distanced herself from Yogendra Yadav and Prashant Bhushan. She then trusted Kejriwal’s leadership and continued to work for the party. Gradually, she won Kejriwal’s trust. In 2020, she was given an assembly ticket from Kalka Ji seat for the first time. She won the election and reached the assembly. The party also made her its prominent face in front of the media again. After Manish Sisodia and Satyendra Jain resigned from jail, Atishi was included in Kejriwal’s cabinet. Kejriwal entrusted her with the responsibility of 18 departments including education and electricity.

Kejriwal had already given the hint
When Kejriwal was in jail, the question arose as to who would hoist the tricolour on 15 August in Delhi, Kejriwal wrote a letter to LG from jail requesting Atishi to be given this opportunity. However, due to jail rules, this letter did not reach LG. LG VK Saxena may have given the opportunity to hoist the flag to Kejriwal’s minister Atishi, but Delhi had already received the signal that Atishi’s stature is now at the top in the Delhi government.

Why only Aatishi?
At least half a dozen names were being said to be in the race for the new Chief Minister of Delhi. However, as expected, Atishi was given this responsibility. There are many reasons behind this. Being a woman as well as administrative experience also worked in favor of Atishi. The way she played an active role in the organization and the government after Kejriwal went to jail, she emerged as the main face of the party. The party promotes the work done by the Delhi government in the field of education as its biggest achievement and Atishi is considered to have played an important role in this.
