Bharat Bandh Today LIVE:A nationwide bandh has been called by the Aarakshan Bachao Sangharsh Samiti on Wednesday, 21 August. The committee has taken this step in protest against the recent Supreme Court decision on reservation. However, there are reports that government offices, banks and essential services will continue to function during this period. The Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) has also decided to support the bandh called by the organizations representing the Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST).
The National Confederation of Dalit and Adivasi Organisations (NACDAOR) has released a list of demands that include justice and equality for Scheduled Castes (SCs), Scheduled Tribes (STs) and Other Backward Classes (OBCs). The organisation has taken a sharp view of the recent seven-judge bench verdict of the Supreme Court, which, according to them, dilutes the nine-judge bench verdict in the landmark Indira Sawhney case that established the framework for reservation in India.

The one-day Bharat Bandh called on Wednesday over the Supreme Court’s decision on the creamy layer in reservation for Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes (SC-ST) had a mixed impact in Jharkhand. Due to the bandh, public transport buses were off the roads and schools were also closed. An official said that due to the strike, Chief Minister Hemant Soren has also cancelled his visit to Palamu.

BSP President Mayawati said on the social media platform ‘X’, ‘BSP supports the call for Bharat Bandh, because due to the conspiracy of BJP, Congress and other parties against the anti-reservation and collusion to end it by making it ineffective, there is a lot of anger and resentment among both the communities against the Supreme Court’s decision related to the creamy layer in the sub-classification of SC-ST on August 1, 2024.’
