CBI action in Kolkata rape case, former principal Sandip Ghosh and policeman arrested

In the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case, the CBI on Saturday arrested former principal of RG Kar Medical College Sandip Ghosh and a police personnel for alleged delay in filing an FIR and destruction of evidence. Earlier, former principal Ghosh was arrested in a case of financial irregularities. He is in judicial custody till September 23. The arrested police officer has been identified as SHO Abhijit Mandal of Tala police station.

In the case of rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College, the CBI had conducted a polygraph test of the former principal on 26 August. Now once again the CBI has arrested Sandip Ghosh. The Kolkata High Court had given the CBI three weeks’ time to report the progress made in its investigation report in this case. This time limit will expire on 17 September.

Earlier, the body of a 31-year-old doctor was found in the seminar hall of R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on 9 August. The condition of the body indicated foul play. Later, after examination, it was found that she was brutally raped before being murdered. After this, people across the country were enraged over this incident.

Principal tampered with evidence- BJP

The college principal is accused of trying to hide things after the incident. The BJP alleged that Sandeep Ghosh ordered the renovation of the incident site even before the investigation was conducted. Union Minister and West Bengal BJP chief Sukanta Majumdar shared an alleged letter signed by Sandeep Ghosh, in which Sandeep Ghosh had ordered the renovation of the incident site.

The BJP said that this order was given only a day after the murder, i.e. on 10 August. Such a big incident happened in the college and you have time to renovate, that too at the same place, leaving the entire college. The BJP as well as the victim’s colleagues and protesters have accused the crime scene of being tampered with but the police commissioner has denied any such tampering.

Last week, the CBI had accused the former principal of the medical college, Sandip Ghosh, of running a criminal nexus to make profits through unfair means. Ghosh was also accused of financial irregularities in the college’s work. The agency had also arrested two vendors on charges of these financial irregularities.
