Chief Justice of India Chandrachud: Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud on Saturday addressed the commemoration of the special Lok Adalat in the Supreme Court. During this, he opened a secret that a very senior secretary and former civil servant of the Government of India had said that he never knew that the Supreme Court also settles such small cases, because we are used to seeing the Supreme Court dealing with all the big cases.
According to news agency ANI, CJI DY Chandrachud said, “Many people are deprived of the kind of small work we do in the Supreme Court. When giants like BR Ambedkar created the Constitution, they created it with a mission. It was a court that was being established in a poor society where there was lack of access to justice. This was the idea behind the establishment of this institution. It will be a court that will reach the lives of common citizens. The purpose of Lok Adalat is to take justice to the homes of the people.”
In his address, CJI Chandrachud said that in the effort to design this Lok Adalat, we got tremendous cooperation at every stage. We ensured that every panel would consist of two judges and two members of the bar. One senior advocate and one advocate from SCAORA. He said that I think that even though the Supreme Court is located in Delhi, it is the Supreme Court of India. We have recruited officers from all over the country to the registry and they bring diversity and inclusion and knowledge about life and society across India.
