Does the common man get so much time? SC on long debate for Kejriwal

The bail plea of Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal was heard in the Supreme Court on Thursday. While hearing the petitions filed by Kejriwal challenging the CBI’s arrest in the alleged liquor scam and for bail, the Supreme Court made an important comment. The court said that how long should the bail cases be heard, does the common man get that much time?

Senior advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, who appeared for Kejriwal, presented his arguments for about an hour. According to Bar and Bench, Justice Suryakant said, “We will listen to both the sides. But we are thinking how long should we hear the bail case, do normal people get so much time?” On this, ASG SV Raju, who appeared for the CBI, said that the investigating agency should get at least the same time as the petitioner has been given. Singhvi told the court that he will finish his argument by 12 o’clock so that the hearing can be completed by lunch.

Abhishek Manu Singhvi told a bench of Justices Suryakant and Ujjwal Bhuiyan that Kejriwal’s name is not in the CBI FIR and besides, there is no danger of him fleeing. Singhvi said that the apex court, while granting interim bail to Kejriwal in the money laundering case, had said that the Chief Minister is not a threat to society. He said, ‘What started in August 2023 led to his arrest in the money laundering case in March this year.’ Singhvi said that the apex court and a subordinate court have already granted him bail.

Kejriwal was arrested by the CBI on 25 June. He has got bail from the Supreme Court in the ED case. But he could not get bail due to his arrest in the CBI case. Arvind Kejriwal was arrested by the ED on 21 March on charges of alleged liquor scam. The investigating agencies have called him the mastermind of the alleged scam.
