CJI DY Chandrachud News: Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud stressed the importance of freedom and said that recent events in neighbouring Bangladesh are a reminder of the value of these rights. Speaking to reporters after hoisting the national flag in the Supreme Court premises on Thursday, Justice Chandrachud said, “Independence Day reminds us of the duties of the people of the country towards each other and towards the nation to realise all the values of the Constitution.”
CJI Chandrachud said, “What is happening in Bangladesh today is a clear reminder of how valuable freedom is to us. It is very easy to take freedom for granted, but it is important to understand the events of the past so that we remember how important these things are.”
The Chief Justice’s remarks came amid growing concerns in India over incidents of attacks on the minority Hindu community in Bangladesh. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country on August 5 after weeks of violent protests. Justice Chandrachud said that many lawyers left their legal profession and dedicated themselves to the nation.
He told the journalists, “On the occasion of Independence Day, I extend my heartfelt greetings to all of you, our journalist colleagues. Through you, I extend my heartfelt greetings of Independence Day to the entire country, especially to those associated with the law.” The Chief Justice said, “This is a day to remind us of our duties towards each other and towards the nation.”
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal was also present during the flag hoisting. He said the Constitution is supreme. “The Chief Justice had said a few days ago that the Constitution is supreme. If it is imbibed by the legislature, the executive and the judiciary, India will become a developed nation,” the minister said. Supreme Court Bar Association President and senior advocate Kapil Sibal recalled the words of first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru and said this is the freedom the country is celebrating.
