Geologists from the University of Colorado have presented strong evidence that the Earth was once a ball of ice! The theory states that at one time the Earth was completely covered by glaciers. Even the equator was covered with ice. Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences This study has been published in. Through this, the first physical evidence of global freeze is found which shows that about 700 million years ago the Earth was completely covered with ice.
The study’s lead author Liam Courtney Davies and his team emphasized that the Front Range of Colorado’s Rocky Mountains contains some rocks called Tavakaiv or Tava sandstone. The researchers used state-of-the-art dating techniques including laser ablation mass spectrometry. Scientists found that these rocks were underground about 700 million years ago. And the reason given behind this is that they were buried under the weight of the glaciers.
The glacial evidence found here testifies that at one time there was ice present here which pressed the rocks also. Finding evidence of glaciers on the Mediterranean also directly means that the entire planet was buried in ice at that time. At that time the Earth was floating in space in the form of an ice ball. Here not only does the snowball theory get support but it also shows that the Earth was going through a serious phase. However, the research team believes that more research is yet to be done in this regard. But his discovery will inspire others to do further research.
