A head constable of Jammu and Kashmir Police was martyred and two officers were injured on Saturday evening during an encounter between security forces and terrorists in a remote village of Kathua district in Jammu and Kashmir. Officials said Jammu region’s Additional Director General of Police Anand Jain and senior officers have reached the spot to monitor the operation.
Police spokesperson said, ‘During the ongoing encounter in Kog (Mandali) village, a head constable of police, Shaheed Bashir Ahmed, was martyred and an assistant sub-inspector was injured by bullets.’ According to security officials, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (Operations) was also injured in the encounter.
Officials said that at around 5.30 pm, security forces launched a joint cordon and search operation in the village after receiving information about the presence of a group of terrorists in a house, during which the firing started. He said that as soon as the security forces reached near the targeted house, the hidden terrorists started firing, following which the security forces also retaliated.
He said that the area has been tightly cordoned off with additional forces called from nearby security camps. Officials said that after the initial firing there was peace for some time and after evening the firing between the two sides intensified and the hidden terrorists started trying to break the siege by taking advantage of the darkness. He said that modern equipment including drones have been deployed to keep strict vigil in the area.
Two terrorists killed in Kulgam
Terrorist Aaqib Ahmed Shergujri and two terrorists were killed in a 10-hour long encounter in Kulgam. Five security personnel have also been injured.
