Holiday on Durga Puja, assurance of security; Bangladesh government on back foot after protests

Hindus had to face severe atrocities in the violence that broke out during the coup of former PM Sheikh Hasina in Bangladesh. There was violence against Hindus in 27 districts across the country and then the people of the Hindu community took to the streets and protested. Not only this, there were protests against the atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh in many countries including America, Canada and India. Now the Bangladesh government is on the back foot regarding this. Interim government head Mohammad Yunus is now going to meet the representatives of the Hindu community. Apart from this, he also apologized for the violence and termed the incidents as sad.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh’s Home Ministry has proposed a three-day holiday on the occasion of Durga Puja. Brigadier General (Retired) Shakhawat Hussain, an advisor to the ministry, said that it would be right to do so. He said this after meeting Hindu community leaders on Monday. He said, ‘I met Hindu leaders. I have assured them to consider this proposal. Durga Puja is a big festival. I will recommend to the government on behalf of my ministry that a three-day holiday be declared on the occasion of Durga Puja. Even if this does not happen, at least two days of holiday should be given. If there is only one day holiday, then people doing jobs are not able to participate in the festival.’

Let us tell you that the violence that erupted during Sheikh Hasina’s coup affected Hindus on a large scale. Two Hindu councilors were killed. Apart from this, the ISKCON temple in Meherpur was attacked. Even the idols were broken. After these incidents, there was a discussion about atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh all over the world. Not only this, while congratulating the formation of the interim government in Bangladesh, PM Narendra Modi also advised to protect the Hindus. Now the Bangladesh government has come on the back foot on this matter and has assured the Hindu community of security. People of the Hindu community also protested on the streets of Dhaka.
