Fast bowler Mohammed Shami was dropped from the semi-finals of the 2019 ODI World Cup. Many questions were raised at that time on this decision of the team management. Shami has given his side on the decision of being dropped from the team despite his brilliant performance in this tournament. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami took 14 wickets in four matches, during which he also took a hat-trick against Afghanistan. Shami achieved a five-wicket haul against England.
Mohammed Shami was dropped from India’s last group stage match during the ODI World Cup 2019, which was against Sri Lanka. Everyone was expecting him to return to the team in the semi-finals but he was dropped. India lost the semi-final against New Zealand in Manchester by 18 runs.
“In 2019, I didn’t play for the first 4-5 days, but I took a hat-trick in the next match. After that I took a five-wicket haul. And then I took four wickets in the next game. The same thing happened in 2023. I didn’t play in the first few games and then I took a five-wicket haul and then four and then a five-wicket haul,” India’s veteran bowler Mohammed Shami said on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube show.
He further said, “The only thing that surprises me is that all teams need a player who can perform. I took 13 wickets in three matches. What else do you expect from me? I have neither questions nor answers. I can prove myself only when I get a chance. You gave me a chance and I took 13 wickets in three matches. Then we lost to New Zealand. Overall I played four matches and took 14 wickets. In 2023, I took 24 wickets in seven matches.”
