Bangladesh Chief Justice Obaidul Hasan has finally decided to resign after the ultimatum of the protesters. According to many Bangladesh media reports, the Chief Justice is going to submit his resignation on Saturday evening. Obaidul Hasan was appointed Chief Justice of Bangladesh last year. Hasan is also considered close to former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Amid political turmoil in Bangladesh, protests demanding the resignation of the country’s Chief Justice have intensified. Hundreds of protesters gathered in front of the High Court building in Dhaka on Saturday, demanding the resignation of seven judges including the Chief Justice. The protesters were sitting on a peaceful sit-in and made it clear that they would continue this movement until their demands were met. Meanwhile, Bangladesh Army personnel were deployed in the High Court premises for security.
The protesters were carrying the national flag of Bangladesh and were adamant about their demands. According to Bangladeshi media Prothom Alo, this protest was led by Asif Mahmud Sajib, who is one of the advisors of the newly formed interim government. Sharing information through social media, he said that the demands of the protesters are for the resignation of seven judges including the Chief Justice. However, he also clarified that the district courts have nothing to do with this movement and requested the protesters not to sit in protest in front of the district courts.
A full court meeting was called on Saturday with judges from both divisions of the Bangladesh Supreme Court but the meeting was suddenly cancelled. Supreme Court Registrar General Aziz Ahmed confirmed the cancellation of the meeting, but he did not give the reason behind it. After the meeting was cancelled, Asif Mahmud Sajib said on social media that he is demanding the immediate resignation of the Chief Justice. He also said that the demands of the public movement should be respected. This entire incident has created a stir in the judicial and political circles of Bangladesh. Now it will be interesting to see in which direction the condition of Bangladesh is heading in the coming days.
