BCCI has started preparations for IPL 2025 mega auction. The Board of Control for Cricket in India may hold a meeting with the owners of IPL franchises at the end of July. Through this meeting, a big decision is expected regarding the number of players to be retained and the salary cap for the upcoming season. Although the BCCI has not yet officially announced the rules for retaining players, the IPL franchises have started strategizing for the next season. While Delhi Capitals have parted ways with Ricky Ponting, Chennai Super Kings legend MS Dhoni will play his last season next year and in such a situation the franchise will be looking for his replacement. Many reports have claimed that CSK has found a player for this position.

Chennai Super Kings had chosen Rituraj Gaikwad as the new captain of the team in place of MS Dhoni before IPL 2024. However, Chennai could not reach the playoffs last season. The team won seven out of 14 matches under Gaikwad’s captaincy and lost the same number and finished fifth in the points table. During the mega auction, the Chennai team would like to buy Dhoni’s replacement. Dhoni was very troubled by a knee injury last season. He underwent surgery in 2023 but he was seen in trouble many times during IPL 2024.

According to Dainik Jagran, the Delhi Capitals team is not happy with Rishabh Pant’s captaincy and due to this they are considering retaining him. There is also a discussion on whether Rishabh Pant should be traded, although the franchise’s cricket director Sourav Ganguly was in favor of retaining Pant as captain. If Delhi Capitals releases Pant before IPL 2025, Chennai can buy him as Dhoni’s replacement. A CSK source also told the national daily that if Dhoni does not want to play anymore, the franchise will try to bring in the country’s next top wicketkeeper.
