Sony Sells 24 Lakh PS5 Units in First Quarter, Music Division Gives Strong Profit

Japanese consumer electronics company Sony has raised its revenue and profit forecast for the current financial year. The company’s music and software divisions performed well in the first quarter. Sony’s operating profit rose to JPY 279.1 billion (about $1.9 billion) in the quarter ended June. It was about JPY 253 billion in the same quarter last year.

The company has said that its sales in this financial year may be JPY 12.6 lakh crore and operating profit may be JPY 1.3 lakh crore. Sony ‘s PlayStation division has found it easy to increase sales from first party and online multiplayer games like Helldivers 2. However, the company has benefited the most from better exchange rates. In the first quarter, it has sold 24 lakh units of PlayStation 5 console. However, this is much less than the analysts’ forecast of 30 lakh units. In the first quarter, the company’s music business has had the highest share in the profit.

Kazunori Ito, director at Morningstar Investment, said, “PlayStation’s business is not as good as the data shows. The weakening of the yen has boosted the business’ revenue and profit. Sony had said its hardware sales would slow this fiscal year, but the pace of the slowdown is much faster than our forecast.”
