Supreme Court stands firm on the decision of sub-quota in SC and ST reservation, rejects review petition

The Supreme Court has rejected the petitions filed against its decision on sub-categorization in reservation for Scheduled Castes and Tribes. The apex court had given its verdict in this regard on August 1 itself and had said that if the state governments feel necessary, sub-quotas can be fixed for some castes within the SC and ST quota. A section of people opposed this and there was also a movement. Apart from this, petitions were filed. While hearing these on Friday, the apex court refused to consider them.

A 7-judge bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud said that there was no error in the decision that warranted reconsideration. The court said, ‘We have seen the review petitions. It seems that there is no flaw in the old decision which should be reconsidered. Therefore the review petitions are dismissed. Justices BR Gavai, Vikram Nath, Bela M. Trivedi, Pankaj Mithal, Manoj Mishra and Satish Chandra Sharma were included in this bench. The court said that no solid basis was given in the petitions as to why the court should reconsider the August 1 decision.
