Terrible floods wreak havoc in 11 districts, 59 people died in Bangladesh; more than 50 lakh affected

The devastating floods in Bangladesh have made life difficult for the people. About 54 lakh people in 11 districts have been affected due to the floods in the neighboring country. At least 59 people, including six women and 12 children, died in flood-related incidents. Officials gave this information on Saturday.

The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief, while giving an update on the flood situation, said that the highest number of deaths have occurred in Comilla and Feni districts, which are bordering Tripura in the northeastern part of India. According to the ministry, 14 and 23 people have died in the two districts respectively.

Bangladesh has been affected for nearly two weeks by floods caused by heavy rains in the Bangladesh Delta region and upper Indian regions. This has led to the death of people and cattle, displacement of thousands of people and damage to property. This has emerged as a major administrative challenge for the newly formed interim government amid political change in the country.

“The floods have affected 54,57,702 people in 504 unions and municipalities in 11 districts. Nearly seven lakh families are still stranded in the floods, while nearly four lakh people are forced to live in 3,928 relief camps,” state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangatha (BSS) quoted officials of the Disaster Management and Relief Ministry as saying.

According to reports, a total of 36,139 cattle have also been given shelter there. Officials said that as the situation is improving, people are returning home, while communication has become normal in the flood-affected districts. According to meteorologists, apart from torrential rains, overflowing rivers, El Niño and climate change phenomena are responsible for the devastating floods in the country.
