Supreme Court News: The number of pending cases in the Supreme Court is constantly increasing. In the last ten years, it has increased eight times. However, the increasing number of cases has been curbed only twice. Currently, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court is around 83 thousand, which is the highest till date. It is worth noting that the number of judges in the Supreme Court was increased from 26 to 31 in 2009. But despite this, there is no decrease in the pending cases in the Supreme Court. In 2013, the pending cases in the Supreme Court increased from 50 thousand to 66 thousand. However, in 2014, it came down to 63 thousand. At that time, the CJIs were P Sathasivam and RM Lodha. Later, during the tenure of CJI HL Dattu, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court in 2015 was 59 thousand.
The next year, i.e. in 2016, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court reached 63 thousand. At that time, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was TS Thakur. Later, during the tenure of Justice JS Khekhar, the number of pending cases in the Supreme Court came down to 56 thousand. Justice Khekhar had proposed paperless working in the courts. In 2018, when Justice Deepak Mishra was the CJI, the pending cases started increasing again and reached 57000. After this, the CJI Justice Ranjan Gogoi convinced the government to increase the number of judges in the Supreme Court. But after the increase in the number of judges, the cases also increased and the pendency increased to 60 thousand cases.
During the tenure of Justice S Bobde, the corona pandemic came and the hearing of the cases came to a halt. After this, the hearing started again in a virtual manner and the number of cases had increased to 65 thousand. In 2021-22 also, the effect of Kovid was there and during the tenure of CJI NV Ramanna, the pending cases in the Supreme Court kept increasing. In the year 2021, the pending cases touched the figure of 70 thousand. At the same time, by the end of 2022, their number was 79 thousand. This was the time when CJI Ramanna and UU Lalit retired and DY Chandrachud became the new CJI. In the last two years, four thousand more pending cases came to the fore and now the total number of such cases is close to 83000. The exact figure of total pending cases is 82,831. In this, 27,604 cases are less than a year old.
