BNP on Sheikh Hasina: Sheikh Hasina’s stay in India is not going down well with Khaleda Zia’s party. A statement issued by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) said that the people of Bangladesh will not see it in a good light. Along with this, the statement also said that the former prime minister’s decision to stay in India is entirely hers and that of the Indian authorities. It is worth noting that on Monday, after political turmoil in the country, Hasina resigned and went to India. Senior BNP leader and party spokesperson Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that right now, Hasina is the most wanted in Bangladesh for many crimes ranging from murders and forced disappearances of people to large-scale corruption.
Chowdhury, a member of BNP’s highest decision-making standing committee, said it is Hasina’s own decision and the Indian government’s decision whether she should stay in the neighbouring country or not. He said the BNP has no right on this issue. Still, the people of Bangladesh think that the Indian authorities should take their feelings into consideration. On Thursday, 84-year-old Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus took oath as the head of the interim government. It is believed that after the law and order situation comes under control, the interim government can announce elections in the country.
BNP party spokesperson Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said that the people of Bangladesh feel that the Indian authorities should take care of their feelings. BNP vice president Abdul Awal Mintu also expressed a similar opinion and said that it would have been better if Hasina had not fled to India. He said that it would have been better if she had not fled to India, because we want good relations with India. Bangladesh and its people consider and see India as a friend. However, he said that according to international law, India has the right to give asylum to whomever it wants.
Hussain said that the impact of Sheikh Hasina taking refuge in India is absolutely natural. For example, if I do not like you and someone else is supporting you then naturally I will not like that person. It is natural to have an adverse reaction. But the fact is that India-Bangladesh have always had good relations, whether the Awami League is in power or Sheikh Hasina. He said that when the BNP was in power, I was a minister in the Bangladesh government. We saw that there were excellent relations between the two countries. India is very important for Bangladesh, because India has always supported the people of Bangladesh. Good bilateral relations will continue between the two countries.
