Threat to Indian Embassy in Bangladesh? Security beefed up, ambassador meets Muhammad Yunus

Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma on Thursday met Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government Muhammad Yunus. It is being told that during this time the ambassador raised the issue of security of the Indian Embassy. During the meeting, he reiterated India’s commitment to work with Bangladesh to fulfill the common aspirations of the people of both countries for peace, security and development.

The interim government led by 84-year-old Nobel laureate Yunus was set up a few days after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India on August 5 following unprecedented student-led protests against a controversial quota system in government jobs.

“HC Pranay Verma today held an introductory meeting with Prof Muhammad Yunus, Principal Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh. Reiterated India’s commitment to work with Bangladesh to meet the shared aspirations of the people of India and Bangladesh for peace, security and development,” the Indian High Commission in Dhaka said in a post on ‘X’.

Verma raised concerns about the security of India’s embassy and other establishments in Bangladesh, including its High Commission in Dhaka, during his meeting with Yunus at the government guesthouse Jamuna, the Daily Star newspaper reported. Press Secretary to the chief adviser Shafiqul Alam said the government had already beefed up security in the entire diplomatic area, the paper reported.

Minority issues were also discussed during the meeting. Yunus also spoke about his personal good relations with India where he has many friends. The ‘Yunus Centre’ is functioning in 18 Indian universities.
