The Union Health Ministry reviewed the cases of Chandipura virus and Acute Encephalitis Syndrome (AES) in 3 states with experts. A release issued by Union Health Minister JP Nadda said that Director General of Health Services (DGHS) Dr. Atul Goyal reviewed the cases of Chandipura virus in Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh with experts from AIIMS, Kalawati Saran Children’s Hospital, NIMHANS and other central and state surveillance units.
Let us tell you that since June 2024, 78 cases of acute encephalitis syndrome have been reported in children under 15 years of age in the three states of Gujarat, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. Most of these cases and deaths have occurred in Gujarat. Out of 76 samples tested at NIV Pune, nine were confirmed to be Chandipura virus (CHPV). All these cases originated from Gujarat. This outbreak has caused 28 deaths. Of these, 5 have been confirmed to be due to Chandipura virus (CHPV).
However, experts conclude that infections contribute to only a small proportion of AES cases across the country. He stressed the need for comprehensive epidemiological, environmental and entomological studies of the acute encephalitis syndrome cases reported in Gujarat. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel on Thursday reviewed the steps taken on the current status of suspected cases of viral encephalitis and Chandipura virus.
CM Bhupendra Patel had announced that the state government would launch a major campaign in every tehsil.
