Vinesh Phogat, who missed a medal in the Olympics, has now jumped into the political arena to try her luck. After this, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh has taken an aggressive stance. The former head of the Wrestling Association has accused Vinesh Phogat of cheating to participate in the games. He claimed that Phogat could not win the medal because God has punished her. Let us tell you that Phogat had accused Brij Bhushan Singh of sexual harassment.
The former Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president said, “I want to ask Vinesh Phogat, can a player give trials in two weight categories in one day? Can the trials be stopped for five hours after the weigh-in? You did not win the wrestling. You went there by cheating. God has punished you for this.”
His comments came a day after the Congress named Phogat as its candidate from Julana for the Haryana assembly elections. The BJP leader also alleged that Bajrang Punia participated in the Asian Games without completing the trials.
“Haryana is the crown of India in the field of sports. And they stopped wrestling activities for almost 2.5 years. Isn’t it true that Bajrang went to the Asian Games without trials? I want to ask wrestling experts,” he told news agency ANI.
Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who were at the forefront of the wrestlers’ protest against Brij Bhushan last year, started their political innings by joining the Congress on Friday. Vinesh Phogat has been fielded for the elections, while Punia has been appointed the working president of the All India Kisan Congress.
Continuing his attacks against the wrestlers, Brij Bhushan Singh further said, “If anyone is guilty of insulting daughters, it is Bajrang and Vinesh. Both of them wrote the script. Bhupinder Hooda is also responsible for this.”
He also said that if the party asks him, he will join the BJP’s campaign in Haryana. On Friday, he said that any BJP candidate in Haryana will defeat Phogat.
After joining the party, Phogat had said that the BJP was supporting Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh while the Congress supported the protesting wrestlers in Delhi. Punia too echoed Phogat’s statement, saying the Congress stood by her during her tough time. “What the BJP IT cell is saying today is that we just wanted to do politics. We had written to all women BJP MPs to stand with us but they did not come. We are paying the price for raising our voice for women but now we know that the BJP is standing with the atrocities against women at Jantar Mantar and all other parties are standing with us,” he said.
BJP leaders alleged that the protest by the wrestlers was a conspiracy by the Congress to target the BJP.
