Before visiting India next month, the President of Maldives is busy building better relations with India. Recently President Muizzu said that our government took action against the ministers who spoke against Indian Prime Minister Modi. He said that no one should say such a thing. I will not tolerate this kind of insult to anyone, be it a leader or a common man. Every person has his own reputation.
In fact, earlier this year, the Deputy Ministers of the Youth Ministry of Maldives were suspended for making derogatory posts against Prime Minister Modi on social media. New Delhi had strongly raised this matter with ML. After Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep, Maldives’ Deputy Ministers had criticized the Indian Prime Minister over his post on social media platform ‘X’. In his opinion, this was an attempt to present the Union Territory of Lakshadweep as an alternative tourist destination to the Maldives.
Our aim is not to throw India out – Muizzu
Regarding his India Out campaign before becoming the President, the President said that he is not against any country, our campaign was not to take India out, but the presence of foreign forces in our country was a serious problem, which we were opposing. . Speaking to Maldivian news agency Aadhadhoo.com, President Muizzu said that it was because of this problem that we had started that campaign. The people of Maldives do not want any foreign army to remain on their soil.
In fact, India’s relations with Maldives became tense as soon as Muizzu, known for his pro-China stance, became President. As soon as he became President, Muizzu was asked to withdraw about 90 Indian military personnel operating the three aviation platforms gifted by India. In response, India withdrew its military personnel by May 10 and replaced them with civilian personnel to operate Dornier aircraft and two helicopters.
