Many areas of South India have been receiving intermittent rains for the past few days. A red alert was issued in Dakshina Kannada district in view of the warning of heavy rains in the next 24 hours. The district administration had announced the closure of all schools up to class 12 on Saturday. The Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center and the India Meteorological Department have predicted heavy rains in the districts of coastal Karnataka. However, despite heavy rains and floods in coastal Karnataka, less than normal rainfall has been recorded. This information is according to the hobli-wise rainfall report of the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Center. Hobli is a group of adjacent villages in Karnataka which come under the same administrative unit. According to the report, four hoblis have recorded a significant decrease in rainfall during this southwest monsoon (between June 1 and July 6).
Looking at Kerala, the southwest monsoon has been weak in most parts of the state except some parts of northern Kerala in the first half of July. July is traditionally considered the wettest month during the 4-month southwest monsoon in Kerala. However, heavy rains have occurred in some parts of northern Kerala and hilly areas. However, the monsoon has been weak, especially in central and south Kerala. According to the IMD forecast, most parts of the state except northern Kerala will receive below normal rainfall till July 18. The condition of the offshore trough passing through the west coast of the country is not favorable for generating widespread rains across the state.

Heavy rains have been occurring in different parts of Andhra Pradesh for the past few days. The weather daily report said that heavy rains are expected at isolated places in north-south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema during the next 48 hours. During this period, strong winds with a speed of 30-40 kmph may blow in north-south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema. According to the department, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are expected at many places in north-south coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam and Rayalaseema during the next 7 days. The southwest monsoon has been normal in coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam and the southwest monsoon has been active in Rayalaseema. Rains occurred at some places in coastal Andhra Pradesh, many places in Rayalaseema during the last 24 hours while the weather remained generally dry in Yanam.
