The assembly elections in Jammu and Kashmir have been awaited for a long time. Now the Election Commission (EC) has given a big indication about holding elections soon. The Election Commission has asked the administration of the Union Territory to transfer the officers who are posted in their home districts. Similar instructions have also been given to the governments of Maharashtra, Haryana and Jharkhand. Elections are to be held in these states this year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi had said in Srinagar in June that not only will assembly elections be held in Jammu and Kashmir but it will also be restored to its statehood. Last year, while hearing petitions challenging the removal of Article 370, the Supreme Court had also asked the Election Commission to conduct assembly elections by 30 September 2024.

The Election Commission has told the Chief Secretary of Jammu and Kashmir, Election Officer and other officials that if the election related officials are posted in their home district, then they should be transferred. Earlier, assembly elections were held in Jammu and Kashmir in 2014. Then BJP and PDP formed the government together. However, BJP withdrew support and the government fell. After this, President’s rule was imposed in Jammu and Kashmir.

After the removal of Article 370 in August 2019, Jammu and Kashmir was divided into two union territories. Delimitation of Jammu and Kashmir has also been done. Opposition parties say that BJP is deliberately not holding assembly elections. There has been no formal announcement of elections so far. The term of the Legislative Assembly of Haryana, Jharkhand and Maharashtra is also ending on 30 November, 26 November and 5 January 2025. The Election Commission has also said that if the officers related to the elections are posted at one place for more than three years, then they will also be transferred. The Election Commission has given instructions to conduct the election process in a fair manner.
