The responsibility of investigating the rape-murder case of the Kolkata trainee doctor has been handed over to two top female officers of the CBI. The special thing is that both of them have already exposed some such infamous cases. One of them is Sampat Meena, a 1994 batch IPS officer from Jharkhand, who was involved in the investigation of the Hathras rape-murder case and the Unnao rape case. The second top officer is Seema Pahuja, who was part of the Hathras investigation team. Additional Director Meena is in charge of a team of 25 officers. She will work in a supervisory capacity in this case. Pahuja has been given the responsibility of ground level investigation.
According to NDTV report, Seema Pahuja was part of the investigation of the rape-murder case of a class 10 student in Himachal Pradesh. This case was considered difficult to solve. This Gudiya case of 2017 shook the hill state. The minor girl went missing while returning from school. The route went through a dense forest, where she was kidnapped. The body of the girl was found 2 days after she went missing. During the investigation, it was found that she was raped and then strangled to death. Woodcutter Anil Kumar was found guilty in this case. In 2021, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
What happened in the Unnao case?
The Unnao rape case of 2017 has also been very famous. In this case, BJP leader and local MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar was found guilty of gang-raping a 17-year-old Dalit girl. He was sentenced to life imprisonment. Sengar was expelled from the party after the incident. Kuldeep Sengar was also convicted of the death of the girl’s father in judicial custody, for which he is serving a 10-year jail sentence.
Know what is Hathras incident
Similarly, the Hathras case of 2020 made headlines across the country. A 19-year-old girl was allegedly assaulted and gang-raped by four men from a so-called upper caste. A few days later, she died at Safdarjung Hospital in Delhi. It is known that 3 out of the four accused in this case have been released. The fourth one is Sandeep Thakur who was convicted not for rape or murder, but for culpable homicide. Regarding its decision, the court said that it was related to the mismatch between the woman’s statement and forensic evidence. The police claimed that there was no evidence of rape and the woman died due to injuries on the neck.
