Lahore is the second largest city of Pakistan. But now it has also become the most polluted city in the world whose Air Quality Index (AQI) has crossed 1900. BBC According to, in view of severe pollution, the administration here has issued instructions to keep primary schools closed for 1 week. The city has been wrapped in smog for the last several days. Even two days ago its AQI was recorded very high which had reached around 1100.
This city with a population of about 1.5 crore people is currently trying to breathe in the suffocating air. According to the report, the reasons behind such a serious situation are said to be the smoke emitted from the burning of low-grade diesel, fires set in seasonal farming, as well as dust particles deposited due to the onset of winter.
If the air quality index crosses 300, it is considered dangerous to breathe. But Lahore’s air quality index had crossed 1000 last Saturday itself. In such a situation, it can be estimated how serious the consequences of breathing such air can be on people’s health.
Another worrying thing has come to light from the Weather Department. Weather forecast says that the wind pattern will remain like this for the next 6 to 7 days. This means that there will be no relief from pollution here for 1 week. Therefore, the government has given instructions to close primary schools. The government says that this type of pollution is very dangerous for children. Therefore wearing masks is mandatory in schools.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), breathing toxic air over a long period of time can lead to heart stroke, heart disease, lung cancer, and respiratory diseases.
