The allies of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) are opening a front against the order to put up boards with the name of the owner on hotels, restaurants, dhabas, fruit and other food shops on the Kanwar Yatra route during the month of Sawan in Uttar Pradesh. On Thursday, Nitish Kumar’s party Janata Dal United (JDU) demanded a review of this order, while on Friday, Jayant Chaudhary’s party Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD), which has influence in western Uttar Pradesh, has demanded the withdrawal of this order.
First, Muzaffarnagar police gave such instructions to the shops on the Kanwar route, after which the police gave similar instructions to shopkeepers in Shamli and Saharanpur. After protests from Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) president Asaduddin Owaisi and other opposition leaders, Muzaffarnagar police clarified on Thursday that these instructions are voluntary. But on Friday, CM Yogi Adityanath has ordered shopkeepers to put up their names on the Kanwar route in entire UP.
CM Yogi Adityanath on the front foot, orders to write owner’s name on shops on Kanwar Yatra route across UP
RLD state president Ramashish Rai tweeted on Twitter that the Uttar Pradesh administration’s order to shopkeepers to write their name and religion on their shops is a step promoting caste and religion. The RLD leader has called it an unconstitutional decision and has demanded the administration to withdraw it. Jayant Chaudhary’s party does not have many MPs but it is the only ally of BJP in West UP. Muslims have been given a place in the politics of Jayant Chaudhary’s party, so the statement of its state president is an expression of the resentment spreading among the minorities in the area due to this order.
