Subramanian Swamy now reaches HC on Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship, demands action from the government

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has filed a petition in the High Court in the matter of Rahul Gandhi’s citizenship. Last week, Swamy had alleged that Rahul Gandhi has British citizenship. Now he has approached the court and demanded that it ask the central government to take action in this matter. Apart from this, he has demanded the court to ask the central government for a status report on my complaint. In August 2019, Subramanian Swamy wrote a letter to the central government. He had alleged that Rahul Gandhi has British citizenship and holds a passport of that country.

Quoting Article 9 of the Indian Constitution, he had said that he can be a citizen of only one country. Referring to the Citizenship Act 1955, Swamy had said that his Indian citizenship should be taken away. Referring to the Constitution, he had said that if a citizen takes citizenship of another country, then he will have to renounce Indian citizenship. In this regard, a notice was also sent to Rahul Gandhi by the Central Government on April 20, 2019.

The subject of this notice was – complaint regarding citizenship. Swamy said that Rahul Gandhi is one of the directors of Backlops Limited, a UK registered company. He claimed that the company had filed annual returns in 2005 and 2006. According to that, Rahul Gandhi’s date of birth is 19 June 1970. Apart from this, he has been described as a UK citizen. Now Swamy has said in the court that I have asked the central government for a status update on this complaint several times, but did not get any answer. He has now demanded from the court to ask the government the status of action on this issue.
