The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) raided the residence of former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Sandeep Ghosh, early this morning. The raid was conducted in connection with alleged financial irregularities in the college during his tenure. Officials have given this information. Apart from this, the central investigating agency is also conducting searches at 14 other places in the city. During the raid, officials of the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch also reached the residence of Dr. Debashish Som, demonstrator of forensic medicine and toxicology at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.
This action has been taken after a complaint was filed three days ago by Akhtar Ali, former deputy superintendent of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. In the complaint, allegations of corruption and irregularities in the institute were made against Dr. Debashish Som.
On Saturday, the CBI registered an FIR against Dr Sandip Ghosh acting on the order of the Calcutta High Court. The investigation began after a single bench of the High Court directed the CBI to investigate the alleged corruption in the medical college. Earlier, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the High Court visited the CBI office at Nizam Palace and handed over important documents related to the case.
Acting promptly on the information, the CBI filed an FIR and submitted a copy of it in the Alipore Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court on Saturday. The Calcutta High Court has given the CBI three weeks to submit a progress report on the investigation, which is to be submitted on September 17.
The medical college was in the news after the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor in a seminar hall on August 9. Sanjay Roy was arrested for this. On the instructions of the Calcutta High Court, the CBI has registered cases of murder as well as alleged financial irregularities.
The Kolkata Police has extended the prohibitory orders near the Government RG Kar Medical College and Hospital for another week till August 31. These orders, first imposed on August 18, prohibit gathering and assembly of more than five people in the specified area.
