Yunus and Biden met in New York on Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly session.
On September 15, a high-level US delegation met Mohammad Yunus in Bangladesh’s capital Dhaka. According to reports, assurances were given then about economic expansion and political relations.
On August 8, Yunus was sworn in as the chief advisor of the interim government of Bangladesh. The ongoing student movement against quota in government jobs in the country turned violent from the beginning of August. After this, on August 5, the then Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and left the country and came to India. Since then she is in India. There are reports that Bangladesh may try for her extradition.
Sheikh Hasina had expressed apprehension
Hasina said that if she had compromised on the sovereignty of St. Martin Island and allowed the US to have influence over the Bay of Bengal, she could have remained the Prime Minister. However, the former Bangladesh PM’s son Shajib Wazed denied that his mother had made any such statement. At the same time, the US also denied interfering in the internal affairs of Bangladesh.
